That’s right Robocop is back and this time he must clean up the city of Detroit by defeating Cain, the head of a drug gang who is flooding the streets with the highly addictive narcotic called “Nuke” in Robocop 2 Arcade.
Released to the arcades in 1991 and based on the 1990 movie of the same name, Robocop 2 Arcade was developed by Data East who made such arcade hits as “bad dudes vs dragon Ninja, Sly Spy and also the arcade rendition of Robocop 1.
The gameplay itself is a side-scrolling, shoot everything that moves style but of course ol’ Robo uses his now iconic machine gun style pistol to take out bad guys. You can also punch and throw guys around like ragdolls when he gets close however.
The controls are pretty straight forward and work a charm – one button for shooting left and one button for shooting right. But Through out the game you can pick up temporary weapons such as the same high powered rifle robocop used to take down ED-209 in the first movie. Comes in handy for one hit kills. Doesn’t last long tho
The game loosely follows the movie – in the sense you will see familiar locations such as the arcade, that cool bit where Robo throws himself into the truck and erm… the ending scene location? But a lot of creative license was taken. I don’t remember these guys in the movie for example.
At the end of every stage you will encounter Boss battles and you will also fight ED-209 and Robo-Cain a total of 3 times. A right coin guzzelur to beat this guy. But the final fight in the movie does take place inside and outside a building. So that’s bonus points.
The game also breaks things up by offering bonus stages in which you must destroy all the trucks and helicopters. Not a bad section by any means and can be quite fun.
So all in all is Robocop 2 Arcade game a good game? Yes I like to think so. It gets some flack for not being as good as the original Robocop 1 arcade game but some good fun is to be had. Hey, you’d probably complete it in under 40 minutes and if you are a fan of the movies? Why not give it a try.
