Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Announced

On May 24th, at the Sony Showcase 2023, Konami finally revealed the long rumoured exsistence of the Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake – officially known as Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater.

Based on the critically acclamied 2004 title by Hideo Kojima, the game debuted with a pre-rendered trailer which you can view below:

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Trailer:

Kept you waiting huh?

Metal Gear Solid fans world wide rejoiced but at the same time there was some criticism. Firstly, MGS is a series known for highly cinematic in-game rendered trailers. So the idea of a short, pre-rendered trailer was a little strange. Not to mention it casts doubt of how long the game is in development, and more importantly, how long players will have to wait to get their hands on the game as no release date was given.

Secondly, the trailer has no indication of what development team is behind it – is it Konami? is it another studio Konami hired to develop the game? No one knows and Konami was keeping quiet on purpose. One thing for sure is that series creator Hideo Kojima is not behind it.

What can we expect from the remake?

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was ground breaking upon release, however the gameplay is roughly 20 years old at this point. It’s a safe bet to assume MGS3: Delta will have the same scale, depth and production values as MGS5 – a game with an open world sandbox experience with modern controls and game mechanics. The original MGS3’s jungle (while vastly impressive for the time) was essentially corridors with invisable walls. It was not a true open world game to what we consider now but MGS3 Delta can and should deliver what MGS5 established.

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater release date?

The game was announced for PS5, XBOX Series X and PC, but the truth of the matter is that the pre-rendered trailer raises the question of just how long the game is in development. AAA games take a lot of time and money. In order for the remake to live up to it’s hype it will have a long development time.

To put it into prospective, MGS5 debuted with a feature in-game engine rendered trailer back in December 2012, but the game didn’t release until September 2015. With all that in mind, the realistic release date for this game is likely to be Q4 2025 at the earliest. But do not be suprised if it comes out 2026 at the latest either.
